Joey Wright of www.joeywrightphoto.com is a Florida-based photographer specialising in swimsuit and lifestyle photography who featured on episode 52 of the podcast – 6 years ago.

When I introduced him for his first interview, I said…

I'll be the first to admit “living the dream” gets thrown around too much. How else though, can you describe the life of a photographer who goes to work in boardies (board shorts), t-shirt (tank top) and thongs (flip flops)?

He works on the sunny beaches of Florida and his subjects are gorgeous swimwear models.

Back in episode 52, he was handing out business cards to get bookings and taking any jobs he could.

His dream back then was to get published in Sports Illustrated.

In this interview, the plan was to learn what's changed and how.

One thing is for sure, Instagram content curation, commitment, having fun and staying true to his photographic vision have all played dividends in propelling Joey's photography business forward.

Here’s some more of what we cover in the interview:

  • How has things have changed photographically for Joey in the 6 years since his last interview?

  • How many photography sessions Joey is shooting
  • Doing test shoots for models as a filler in your photography business
  • Making more money doesn't necessarily mean working more hours
  • You're always unemployed until your next gig with freelance work
  • How Joey landed his gig with the Hard Rock Cafe
  • Defining who and what is a commercial photographer
  • Why Joey doesn't share other genres from his portfolio on social media
  • Instagram is every photographer's business card now
  • The need to find balance with your posts on Instagram
  • Stay relevant and keep growing your number of followers on social media
  • Getting sponsored content on Instagram and other social channels as an income stream
  • Does a sponsored content on IG hurt Joey's' business?
  • Why photographers are still not considered influencers
  • The importance of curating photos for your Instagram feed
  • Collaborating with models and influencers to generate more inquiries
  • Joey's revenue today
  • The importance of having a photo retoucher for your business
  • How has hiring a retoucher influenced business revenue?
  • How Joey prices his commercial shoots
  • Creating templates for your contracts or shoot agreements
  • Why nobody gets immunity when it comes to shoot agreements
  • The importance of a good accountant for your photography business
  • You can't put a price on the freedom you want

iTunes Reviews and Shout-outs

Each week I check for any new iTunes reviews and it's always a buzz to receive these… for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, it's confirmation that I'm on the right track with the interviews and that they really are helping you improve your photography business. That's awesome!

Secondly, iTunes is the biggest search engine when it comes to podcasts and it's your reviews and ratings that help other photographers find PhotoBizX. More listeners mean more interviews and ultimately a better show.

If you have left a review in the past, thank you! If you haven't and you'd like to, head to https://photobizx.com/itunes and you can leave some honest feedback and a rating which will help both me and the show and I'll be sure to thank you on the show and add a link to your website or blog if you let me know the URL of your website and your name.

Alternatively, if you've left a review for PhotoBizX and are looking for more backlinks to help your SEO, leave a review for the new Photography Xperiment Podcast and email me your keywords or keyword phrase and where you'd like me to link to.

Another great way to get a backlink to your site is to send a video testimonial. It doesn't need to be fancy and your phone will be perfect. Click record and tell me how PhotoBizX has made a difference to you and your photography business.

Here's the latest review…

Sooooo much great info!

On the PhotoBizX Facebook Page by Atlanta Maternity and Pregnancy photographer, Stuart Hasson.

Andrew, I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying your podcasts. Honestly, it's been hit and miss with some of the content, but all of it puts me into the ‘business/thinking' frame of mind. I'm absolutely loving it.

This past week, I drove to Dallas TX to be with my family for Thanksgiving. It's a 12-hour drive from Atlanta to Dallas. I visit them 2x each year and I usually enjoy music for the drive. This time, I got caught up on past episodes and MAN, what a great way to pass the time! The only problem was trying to take notes while I drive!!! Okay, I pulled over for gas a few times and caught up on the note-taking :0

Both ways I listened (my wife flew, she's the smart one) and it was incredibly enjoyable and educational. I find myself having my ‘creative' side and my ‘business' side. It seems that the two never shall meet 🙂 But that's cool. Luci Dumm, Bernie Griffiths, Shireen Hammond, Bethel Nathan, Emma O'Brien and Johl Dunn had sooooo much great info. I listened to several segments multiple times. It was just fantastic.

Thank you for all that you're doing. It's a real blessing to our photo community.

Looking forward to growing my business and learning.
Stuart

If you're not interested in website speed, you REALLY need to check this article to understand why you should be.

Here's a link to the article: https://www.foregroundweb.com/image-size/

When you get there, check out the tiny scroll bar – it's over 7,000 words long, and it took Alex over  4 months to research and write.

I believe this is the most complete guide out there on optimizing images for performance.

If you've ever had questions about image sizes (and what tools to use, and what those suggestions in GMetrix or Google PageSpeed Insights reports actually mean), this is where to learn the answers.

Along with the article, Alex has also created a paid video guide where he applies all the optimization strategies on a live website, for people that prefer learning by watching, that's all here: https://www.foregroundweb.com/image-optimization-guide/
