Ashley Siegert of The Ultimate Birth Photography Resource and Fig Mint Photography is a US based birth photographer. She's been shooting professionally since 2011 and learnt storytelling and production during her 13 year career in sports television working for ESPN.
Before specialising in births, Ashley was like many newbies to the photography business and photographed anything and everything – especially if someone would pay her to shoot. After photographing her first birth, she knew this was going to be her niche.
When setting up this interview, I saw Ashley has a fantastic online teaching program, The Ultimate Birth Photography Resource, I wanted to know if she was still making an income from photography before committing to an interview and asked the question.
She came back with a resounding yes!
She shoots some commercial work, in addition to the births and photography is definitely the main income source for her and her family. In fact, Ashley's husband Daniel, recently left his day job to work in the photography business full time.
In the lead up to this interview I asked Ashley about her photography sales and was delighted to hear she averages $5500 with a very cool baby program that sees parents booking a series of shoots after the birth. I LOVE this idea – which we cover in the interview – including exactly what Ashley focuses on and includes in her baby program.
