Owen Mathias of www.owenmathias.com is today's guest. I'd been following Owen on Instagram and had seen a blog post or two and felt he'd hit the nail on the head about branding and understanding who his perfect clients were, then pulling them in. That was the pretext for this interview, but we ended up covering photography business branding, expanding into family and kids portraits plus, Google Adwords in the hour we had.
On his about page he says…
I’m not a run-of-the-mill wedding photographer, that’s why I may not be the best photographer choice for every wedding. I openly admit that churches make me feel slightly uncomfortable unless there’s the promise of a great party afterwards! – Owen Mathias
His sense of humour shines through in his photography, his copy, blog posts, comments and captions and by all accounts, it's working well.
I wasn't surprised to learn he has a degree in marketing and that he also taught marketing for seven years in universities and colleges.
We seem to jump from topic to topic in this interview, till he mentioned Google Adwords and the success he's been having with them. Interestingly, his tactics revolve around utilising Adwords if your site is stuck on page two or three in search.
Here’s some more of what we cover in the interview:
Do you really need a wedding photographer? Probably not.
But what if your bridesmaid pops on a unicorn head and crawls around on all fours?
Could you rely on any of your mates to photograph this well on their iPhones?
There'll be hundreds of other moments on your wedding day that you'll want to look back on, laugh at, print and cherish.
This is the first photo Michaela and Tom had alone after their ceremony, and Tom went straight in for the headbite.
I'm not a huge fan of posing, it can be extremely awkward if done badly. It's far nicer to see couples acting naturally, relaxed and having fun together on the best day of their lives.
It's important that couples both feel comfortable with their photographer, and I'm confident it's something that all of my clients would say about me.
Of course, if you really want a bossy twat to pose you up in awkward ways like broken toy soldiers then that's your choice. You can see it by looking into the eyes of their clients.

Having a wedding photographer that’s sort of polite but a little bit sweary on their website or has controversial Facebook and Instagram posts, maybe something that fits with what they’re trying to achieve on their wedding day. – Owen Mathias

iTunes Reviews and Shout-outs
Each week I check for any new iTunes reviews and it's always a buzz to receive these… for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, it's confirmation that I'm on the right track with the interviews and that they really are helping you improve your photography business. That's awesome!
Secondly, iTunes is the biggest search engine when it comes to podcasts and it's your reviews and ratings that help other photographers find PhotoBizX. More listeners mean more interviews and ultimately a better show.
If you have left a review in the past, thank you!
If you haven't and you'd like to, head to https://photobizx.com/itunes and you can leave some honest feedback and a rating which will help both me and the show and I'll be sure to thank you on the show and add a link to your website or blog if you let me know the URL of your website and your name.
Alternatively, if you've left a review for PhotoBizX and are looking for more backlinks to help your SEO, leave a review for the new Photography Xperiment Podcast and email me your keywords or keyword phrase and where you'd like me to link to.
Another great way to get a backlink to your site is to send a video testimonial like Broome wedding photographer, Nik Buttigieg did. It doesn't need to be fancy and your phone will be perfect. Click record and tell me how PhotoBizX has made a difference to you and your photography business.

Online Sales Masterclass – 20% off
It's well known that In Person Sales (IPS) generally outperform Online Sales and there always seems to be a big industry-wide push towards this form of photography sales. Many experts, gurus, rockstars and teachers push hard to get newbies especially into selling in person. Their intentions are good and I'm in the same boat and prefer IPS to online sales in my business.
However… IPS isn't for everyone!
For some photographers, online selling is a better fit either all of the time or at least for some sessions – like it is for me.
Are you a photographer who…
- Has no time for IPS – maybe you have another job or want more time with your family
- Prefers to focus on shooting and not selling
- Shoots on the move while travelling from location to location and don't want to be tied down with IPS
- Works with clients who are holidaying away from their home and only visiting the area you service
- With a dislike of selling in person – may be selling just isn't for you
- Just likes the idea of working online to sell
- Is starting out and selling your photography is new to you and possibly even scares you
- Doesn't have a space to sell in and selling in the clients home or a coffee shop is just a turn-off
Does this sound familiar? If so… this course is definitely for you.

I think in trying to appeal to everybody you don’t actually appeal to anyone. – Owen Mathias

Thank you!
Thanks again for listening and big thanks to Owen for sharing his thoughts on business, marketing, branding and utilising Google Adwords for a wedding photography business.
I try to present myself as that kind of photographer that I feel that my clients want. Which is somebody that’s there to help them on the day and not to kind of get in their way. – Owen Mathias
